It is important to know the type of decision we make to make such decision well.
Different decision theories have evolved over the years and much have been interesting to read and senior executives have blocked themselves from lessons on
The senior executives desire for better decisions is not without their propensity for error.
In recent times, the research decisions published are seen as not the challenging one for managers.
The strategic decision-making approach calls for a different approach to follow.
At the various points of making up our minds, it is said that a decision is made or about to be made. Be it at personal or corporate level. At those point of decisions, it is sort of confusing why the same word is referred as a decision.
As on a personal level, it is either we consider the type of course to read in the university, or even where to study for the university education degree. It is either of the various options we have laid down.
Likewise, for corporate decisions, a company we be faced with a decision to make or buy, entry into a new market, launch or do not launch a new product in a new market or even acquire another company. These are important decisions by its management to take. All these actions are called decision making tools. The terms are applied to routine as well as complex considerations.
The decisions actions vary in different circumstances. For better strategic decisions to be made, there is need to equip people on how decisions differ.
The few categories that the universe of decisions is broken are as follows:
- Categorising Decisions- It is said that decisions vary along two dimensions: Control and Performance.
- Control – This considers on how much we can influence the terms of the decisions and the outcome. It could be if we are choosing among the various options at our disposal or those options that is presented to us.
We may ask ourselves if it is possible to make a one-time judgement that is unable to be changed after the fact or we have the control over how things play, and it is subject to our own control.
Another dimension is our measurement of success. How is success being measure by us. If our aim to during well irrespective of whatever anyone else does or having to do better than others is our measurement of success. It could be judgement if performance is absolute or relative.
Decisions by individuals or that by corporate leaders are of different dimensions. Some are routine, one-off and some are part of the sequence for improvement or better decisions is structured. As explained, control and performance are the two dimensions on how a basic way to understand how decisions differ.
While catergorising decisions, it is also important to understand the four types of decisions.
- Making routine choices and judgements- Our daily personal routine is most often not easy to control. It is often making a choice of whatever is available of in display. We have low control. Our choices are those that suits us best and no matter what others or doing or buying. The performance is absolute. Example is our investment decisions on purchase of a company’s share, which we cannot improve their performance after our decision to purchase them.
- Influencing Outcomes – So many decisions we involve ourselves in are such that involves more than selecting among options we cannot improve on or make judgment about the things we cannot influence.
