Nature of Human Beings

Affectivity

Helps to integrate all aspects of human beings, especially our emotions. The key to harnessing affectivity is to discern and understand how we feel, if we do not, we would always have poor judgement. It is also important to learn the language of expressing our emotions to others.

Some Misgivings About Affectivity

  1. Spiritism – tends to look at everything from the perspective of conscience and will without considering the place of intelligence and the emotion.
  2. Rationalistic movement – places more importance on the intellectual part of humans with the belief that reasoning is everything.
  3. Primacy of feeling – this movement arrogates everything to how we feel and believes that feeling is everything about humans

Importance of Affectivity

Since feelings are contagious, temporary and subjective, and often create temporary effects, we must not base our entire life and judgements on them, naturality must come in and there must be an integration of the whole being.

Correct integration often starts with self-awareness and the understanding that integration helps one to be a better person, it nurtures maturity and integrity.

It helps us to always evaluate our feelings and know what importance to give to them through a thoughtful choice process with the intellect taking the lead in analysing our feelings.

It also helps us to check societal standards and their influences on us. This enables us to carefully select our associations since we understand how they may influence us.

How to make the best of Affectivity

1. We must be knowledgeable about ourselves because knowledge helps us to process things better and fosters better integration. The more information we have and process, the better our chances of making the right judgement. Also, educating our will and affectivity will enhance our sense of making the right judgement.

2. We must always check the truth or reality of things

3. We must check our biases and assumptions

4. We need openness to the perspectives of others about things

5. Reflection would also help our judgment, it helps us to ask the right questions, reason things out and clarify assumptions.

In conclusion, to make the best of affectivity, it must be integrated with our will and feeling, enhanced by proper education, openness, honesty and reflection with its attendant benefits of arriving at an adequate understanding of oneself, his feelings and right judgments.

Analysis of Business Problems

Cognitive Biases

In analysing business problems, there are two mental operations that can come to play;

1. System 1 – it follows a pattern, and intuition, often assumes and readily jumps to conclusions without thinking systematically. It is a mental shortcut approach that does not require much thinking. Popularly known as advocacy approaches. It is an automatic, effortless and often unconscious process.

2. System 2 – This puts more effort into thinking, and entails deliberate, and intentional mental processes known as an enquire process. It helps us to take a second look, and several looks at the situation at hand. It is a controlled, effortful, usually conscious, logically coherent and rule-governed process.

In decision-making, we often demonstrate anchoring trap, status-quo trap, framing trap, sunk cost trap, motivated reasoning, and confirmation trap. These biases can undermine our clear understanding of the situation and attendant conclusions or decisions
