Romans 12:11, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” In recent times, laziness has overtaken a vast majority of youths. This vice has crept into the office and academic environment. A staff would resume at the office on time, and rather than seek ways to add value to the company they work for, would loiter on the streets of social media for a vast majority of the day. Students would look for shortcuts and cheat for assignments and examinations rather than put in the hours to improve themselves. The business owner is not left out. Walk into the streets and see for yourselves. Rather than commit to adding value to customers, you see businessmen and women cutting corners in the field.
Laziness and squandering are vices that go hand in hand. Provers 18:9, “He also that is slothful in his work is a brother to him that is a great waster.” From the perspective of God, laziness and wastefulness are in the same categories. Laziness is simply wasting time. We do not have infinite time to spend here on Earth. We have to maximize the period we see on the green Earth.
Slothfulness can lead to the destruction of dreams and ambitions. Can you imagine how the Earth would have been if people were diligent and sought ways of adding value? Laziness can lead to severe health problems, either mentally or physically. Depression can easily creep in when you are not active. This vice leads to lost business and career growth and negatively impacts our self-confidence.
We can overcome laziness by setting realistic and measurable goals. When our goals are clearly defined and cut into small bits, we are much more able to achieve them. The joy of meeting the first target spurs us to meet the next. This joy initiates the cycle of success, and we are motivated to do more. When we focus on our strengths and passions, we can enjoy what we do and not give in to slothfulness. Having a teachable spirit (asking for help where necessary) and avoiding distractions is also crucial in the fight against laziness. You cannot dangle a yam before a goat and not eat it to eat it. Keep your distractions away from your vicinity.
What is in for me to stop being lazy? “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.” God himself guarantees success for the diligent. How about office politics? You are responsible for the outcome of your life. Focus on what you can control and leave what you cannot control. Hard work supports a healthy life both mentally and physically. It is common knowledge that the more productive you are, the happier you get. Hard work in this context means engaging in profitable work.
In conclusion, Brother Paul in Colossians 3:17 admonishes us that whatsoever we do in word or deed, we should do so in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him. Therefore, as you go to work or your business, do it as a service to God in the name of Jesus, not with eye service but with a genuine desire to draw souls to God through your work. Men do not light a candle and hide it under a bushel but on a lampstand to give light to everyone. Thus, be that light in your office or business, be blessed.
