Oluwashola returned from the England after his Master’s Degree. He struggled to get a job but to no avail despite all the support from family, friends and loved ones. His fiancée also assisted him with some of her family contacts to get a job. All yielded no result. Instead of staying at home, he decided to engage in trade and his fiancée assisted him with some funds through her family’s support. Oluwashola traded and after a couple of months, he lost interest in the trade business due to the unexpected challenges associated with the job.
He met a friend who linked him up with a building project. He was able to contribute his quota and while on the project, he got married to Iyanuoluwa. Iyanuoluwa’s family supported the young couple with their accommodation and as deemed fit to enable them begin their journey as man and wife. Anytime Oluwashola needs financial assistance, Iyanuoluwa was always ready and willing to assist as she gets support from her family. There was no support from her husband’s family. At times, Iyanuoluwa is compelled by her husband to get a loan to support her husband and this she pays back alone being a salary earner.
When Oluwashola was paid for the job done, he refused to acknowledge or assist his wife to offset any part of the loan. He always faulted his wife for his inability to get a job. In order not to make Oluwashola feel bad, Iyanuoluwa continued to support as deemed fit. Oluwashola spent his money on things that he wanted. Oluwashola did not get any further contract nor job. So did his wife think but he was just being lazy. He might be at home for four to eight months at a stretch. Living on his wife as if he were the major provider. Each time Iyanuoluwa complained, he manipulates her into silence. This continued for a very long time.
Oluwashola is always picky about jobs and contacts that comes his way. He refuses to do nothing neither does he assist his wife at home or with their child. The wife struggled to keep a balance even though it was difficult. No matter what happens, he was always right. He puts the family into debt and pretended that they were doing great. He sometimes collects money from Iyinoluwa to meet his egoistic demands. When people reach out to Oluwashola for financial assistance, Iyinoluwa must fulfil or she gets accused of being the reason he is yet to get a job.
This continued for years until covid happened. Iyinoluwa was not earning as she does because of the lock down. Oluwashola would pretend to be considerate and cut cost on their expenses while his own need was being met. Then his wife gave up on everything and stopped being in responsible for the family’s finances. Oluwashola tried all he could to manipulate her but all to no avail because she was tired. Then she was tagged as not being submissive and a badluck to him. Oluwashola left the house without notice thinking this would prompt Iyinoluwa to change her mind and plead with him as his friends assisted him with funds for business. Oluwashola abandoned Iyioluwa with their child as he now has money for business. This did not bother Iyinoluwa
To his greatest surprise, it was the best period of Iyinoluwa’s adult life. She went for therapy and she improved in all areas of her life. Starting with her finances, she was able to cultivate a savings culture and lived a better life. No one orders her around the house and she was able to make decisions for herself unlike when Oluwashola makes all the selfish decisions. Iyinoluwa started doing better at work and making new acquaintances. She focused on growth and self-discovery. Oluwashola did not do well with his venture. He was used to living on his wife. He mismanaged the funds raised for him and became broke. Sadly, he had no one else to turn to.
Iyinoluwa continued to progress with therapy and got a great mentor who supported her with great career decisions. Iyinoluwa is currently doing great. She is raising her child and making wise life’s decisions. Oluwashola is broke and frustrated. The moral of the story; do not bite the finger that fed you. BE KIND!!!
Kindly note that this is a fiction.
