On the 12th of April 2023, we witnessed yet another building collapse in one of the finest areas in Lagos state. A lot of people will wonder despite the building being constructed in a prime area – Banana Island and the billions of Naira spent in purchasing lands in the highbrow areas, keen attention should be paid when it comes to putting up such structures and safety prioritized for the workers.
Other concerns around the role of the government in approving such building plans. In a country with so much corruption one can easily pay their way through anything, this occurrence is quite disturbing, especially for investors who will want to buy these properties in the future.
A Safety Management System is a proactive and comprehensive approach to managing workplace safety. Organizations need to structurally identify hazards and risks, implement the controls to mitigate these risks, and monitor and review the effectiveness of these controls.
Some of the key components of safety management system included:
- Management must lead by example and demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety.
- The development and implementation of policies and procedures to manage safety in the workplace.
- The identification and assessment of hazards and risks, and the implementation of controls to mitigate these risks.
- Effective communication of safety information and the provision of training and education to employees.
- Regular monitoring and review of the effectiveness of the SMS and the identification of areas for improvement.
- Regular review and improvement of the SMS to ensure it remains effective and relevant to changing conditions.
As a government, the lives and properties of its citizens should be of utmost importance. In respect to safety management in the workplace, the government should always ensure the below:
- The government should conduct regular inspections in the workplace that ensure proper safety for all workers. These inspections should be carried out regularly and spot checks and visits should be encouraged.
- The government should require organization, especially those into construction, to obtain building permits before starting construction. This process involves submitting plans and specifications for the building to the government for approval. This ensures that the building is being constructed in accordance with the building codes and safety regulations.
- Governments should establish and enforce building codes that require builders to follow specific guidelines when constructing buildings. These guidelines should cover all aspects of construction, including materials, design, and safety features.
- The government should provide training and education to organizations on the importance of workers safety, safety regulations and best practices. This helps to create awareness of potential hazards and know how to mitigate them.
- Finally, the government can impose fines or other penalties on organizations who violate safety regulations in the workplace. This can serve as a deterrent to anyone who might be tempted to cut corners or take shortcuts.
Overall, the safety management system in the workplace can help to improve safety performance and reduce the likelihood of accidents and incidents.
