Data is a valuable resource that has the power to transform businesses, organizations, and industries. Data can be collected from a wide range of sources from customer interactions and transactions to social media and sensors. However, unlocking the power of data requires more than just collecting it. It involves several key steps, cleaning, processing the data, analyzing it, visualizing it, making data-driven decisions, and continuously improving. By following these steps, organizations can unlock the power of data and use it to gain a competitive edge, improve customer experiences, and drive innovation. Unlocking the power of data involves understanding statistics and how data is sourced.

Statistics is the study of data analysis, interpretation, and presentation. It is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data. It is used to study the behavior of complex systems and to make informed decisions based on data. 

Sources of data. 

Primary Data 

This is data that is collected directly from the source through Questionnaires, surveys, interviews, focused groups, observations, web scrapping, etc. Primary data is collected specifically for the research question at hand and is generally considered to be more accurate and reliable because the researcher has control over the data collection process. However, collecting primary data can be time-consuming and expensive.

Secondary Data, on the other hand, is data that has been collected by someone else for a different purpose but can be used by the researcher for their own research question. Secondary data can come from a variety of sources, such as government agencies, research institutions, private organizations, financial report, Financial Times, world bank report, Nigeria Bureau of Statistics report, etc. Secondary data can be less expensive and faster to obtain than primary data, but it may not always be tailored to the specific research question and may have limitations in terms of accuracy and completeness.

Nature of Data

Qualitative data is descriptive and non-numerical in nature. It is typically collected through interviews, observations, surveys, or other forms of open-ended questioning. Qualitative data can include things like opinions, attitudes, emotions, behaviors, and other subjective measures. It is often used to gain a deeper understanding of people’s experiences, beliefs, and motivations. Qualitative data is typically analyzed through techniques such as coding, categorizing, and thematic analysis.

Quantitative data, on the other hand, is numerical and objective in nature. It is typically collected through surveys, experiments, or other forms of structured questioning. Quantitative data can include things like measurements, counts, percentages, and other numerical values. It is often used to test hypotheses, quantify relationships, and make predictions. Quantitative data is typically analyzed through statistical techniques such as regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and data visualization.

Using insights gained from data analysis, organizations can make informed decisions about everything from marketing strategies to product development. Data is constantly changing, and organizations need to continuously collect and analyze data to stay ahead of the competition and drive innovation. Organizations that can effectively collect, analyze, and act on data will be better positioned to succeed in today’s data-driven world.
