Corporate reporting is a vital skill for any business professional who wants to communicate effectively with stakeholders, investors, regulators, and the public. It involves preparing and presenting financial and non-financial information that reflects the performance, strategy, risks, and opportunities of an organization.
Lagos Business School Master’s in Business Administration offers a course on Corporate Writing which is designed to help me develop my knowledge and skills in this area. In this blog post, I will share some of the key learnings and benefits that I gained from taking this course.
The course covered various topics related to corporate reporting, such as:
– The principles and frameworks that guide corporate reporting
– The different types and formats of corporate reports, such as annual reports
– The best practices and challenges of corporate reporting, such as how to ensure quality, relevance, reliability, comparability, and transparency of information; how to balance the needs and expectations of different stakeholders; how to integrate financial and non-financial information; and how to leverage technology and innovation to enhance corporate reporting.
The course is delivered through a combination of online lectures, readings, quizzes, case studies, and assignments. The facilitators are experienced practitioners and experts in corporate reporting who provide valuable insights and feedback. The course also offers a great opportunity to interact with other participants from different countries and backgrounds who shared their perspectives and experiences on corporate reporting.
One of the main benefits that I have gained from taking this course was that it has helped me to improve my understanding and application of corporate reporting standards and frameworks. I learned what constitutes the component of financial statement (statement of financial position, statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of Cashflow), financial statement equation (assets= Liabilities + Owner’s equity).
Also learnt the broad part in corporate reporting, the synthesis which is the preparation of financial statement and the analysis which is the financial statement analysis. The analysis includes horizontal analysis, vertical analysis, common size statement, trend percentages, ratio analysis. The course further gave an insight as the difference between computation and analysis. Computation does not equal to analysis as it goes beyond collecting data and computing. Analysis encompasses computations and interpretations of data available.
Another benefit that I have gained from taking this course was that it has helped me to enhance my communication and presentation skills in corporate reporting. I have learnt how to structure and design corporate reports that are clear, concise, coherent, and engaging.
Overall, I have found this course to be very useful and rewarding for my professional development. It is helping me to gain a comprehensive and practical understanding of corporate reporting that I can apply in my current and future roles. It is also helping me to develop my confidence and competence in communicating with various stakeholders through corporate reports. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in learning more about corporate reporting or enhancing their skills in this area.
