Football: A Uniting Force

Written by Isma’il · 1 min read >

Football is much more than just a game. It possesses the power to unite people and promote harmony across social, cultural, and political divides. Through international tournaments and local clubs, football can create a sense of shared identity and a robust network.

Football has also played a crucial role in promoting unity within communities. Football clubs bring people from all walks of life together, establishing a shared sense of identity and purpose. This is particularly evident in countries where football clubs are deeply embedded in local cultures, such as Brazil, Spain, England, and of course our country Nigeria.

Although there are numerous other sports, football is the world’s most popular sport. Its popularity makes it easy to organize tournaments between nations, covering all continents worldwide.

Locally, many schools have adopted this system to promote relationships among students, and football competitions are common during inter-house sports and inter-school competitions in our institutions.

The same concept has been utilized as the Dean’s Cup at Lagos Business School (LBS). This is an incredible football competition that involves all MBA programs, including MBAs, MEMBAs, and EMBAs. I think the school (LBS) deliberately organizes this event annually to promote relationships and networking among students.

Initially, many of us in my class did not show interest in the tournament, as we were in the middle of our studies, struggling with assignments and exam preparations. However, the program manager, Madam Toyin, encouraged us to participate, insisting that the event is usually fun and that we did not have to be professional players to participate.

Meanwhile, each team required only eleven players and substitutes. although, in our team, we initially did not seem to have enough players. However, the cheerleaders, who were mostly women from our class, immediately formed a strong support team and boosted our morale. Those who had the intention to watch began to borrow kits and joined us. Indeed, we were not professional players, but we had a team of players and a team of supporters. Together we formed a robust team, and we succeeded.

This beautiful event brought us closer, promoted unity, respect, love, and strengthened our relationships. Everyone was happy, and those who were unable to attend were eager to see the next game. That is the nature of football; it brings people together, transcending social, cultural, and political differences. Football can be seen as a unifying force that can help to break down barriers and bring people together.

Moreover, football can be used as a tool for promoting social inclusion and reducing discrimination. Many football clubs and organizations run initiatives aimed at breaking down barriers and bringing together people from different backgrounds. This can include programs to promote gender equality, combat racism, and support disadvantaged communities.

In conclusion, football is more than just a game; it is a unifying force that brings people together and promotes harmony. Football can be used to break down barriers and bring people from different backgrounds together, making it an excellent tool for promoting social inclusion and reducing discrimination.
