Nigeria is one of the leading locations for businesses  in Africa, because it is a potential fertile ground for  development and growth with emerging markets in various sectors. However, most startup companies in Nigeria fail within the first few years of doing business. This is because of the various challenges of  doing business in Nigeria. Entrepreneurs who plan to start doing business in Nigeria need to be aware of these challenges and find ways of mitigating them. Below are some of the challenges of doing business in Nigeria:

  1. Access To Capital & Credit

While it is difficult to start up a business without capital, it is harder for startup companies to raise capital or get funding in Nigeria. Entrepreneurs who plan to start up businesses in Nigeria need to find ways of sourcing for their capital either thorough loan from friends and family, personal savings and start up grants.

  • Hostile Business Environment

Startup companies find it risky to do business in Nigeria, due to inconsistent government policies and unclear business regulations. Poor infrastructure such as road networks and insecurity also affect startup businesses in Nigeria. In Nigeria, there are no legislations to protect small startups against competitions from bigger organizations and imported goods. Entrepreneurs need to be aware of these factors and have plans to insulate themselves from these factors.

  • Power Supply

Lack of constant power supply is a challenge for most startups as their businesses will have to be powered by generators. This significantly increases the operational cost of doing business in Nigeria.

  • Data Gap

Business owners in Nigeria, need data and information to know where and how to find new customers, skilled labour and the right logistics for their business. Access to that information drives the company’s sales and operations. Without credible data, it will be impossible for business owners to find their ideal customer base and  develop the required strategies for business growth. Access to data, or lack of it, can make or break a business.

  • Government bottlenecks

Bureaucratic and burdensome bottlenecks make it difficult for business owners to get business set up and situated in Nigeria, Even with a lucrative business idea, it could take several months  to set up a business in Nigeria

  • Corruption & Bribery

Corruption and bribery is a major concern for entrepreneurs in Nigeria as it increases the cost of business in the country.

In Conclusion

Small businesses remain an important part of Nigeria’s economy, the presence of these challenges should not discourage entrepreneurs from starting new businesses. Irrespective of all the challenges mentioned, there is still potential for growth for such companies. By remaining aware of these challenges, businesses can use this information to build a reliable strategic business plan. This can help avoid lots of the challenges or roadblocks associated with starting a business in Nigeria.
