I have often wanted to have a diversified investment portfolio from real estate, money markets, shares and even gold. Whilst these were mere thoughts in my head, I knew it would take more than wishful thoughts to translate it into reality.
When I came across the Corporate Financial Accounting module in the MBA, I expected it to be all about accounting terminologies – credit, debit, assets, liabilities etc. I never expected a connection of all these terminologies to the evaluation of whether a company is worth investing in or not. After the very enlightened and gifted faculty expounded my mind on the implications of the Balance sheet, Profit and Loss, Change of Equity Statements of a typical financial report; I began to see another relevance of understanding Corporate Financial Accounting. This could be that knowledge pool from which I make sound investment decisions.
The financial statements analyzed using various case studies from the Healthcare industry to the Banking industry, provided a peripheral understanding of how to interpret the statements. Using Case studies were also another fundamental way that made understanding of the various accounting principles easier to assimilate and practicalize for my investment agenda.
The group exercises and general class discussions enabled me to learn from my peers. Some were chartered accountants, whilst a few like me had academic and career experiences not at all related to Finance or Accounts. Knowing that as I asked seemingly “dumb” questions, there were people who like me did not have a clue and yet other peer members who can answer me in a non-academic way I can relate. To this end, I have approached fellow peers who work in investment houses to give me more clarity on how best to begin my investment journey
By the end of this semester, having finished the Corporate Financial Accounting module, I envisage having shares, money market and mutual funds investments. This is largely thanks to the exposure, knowledge and network I have gathered in these few months.
