The life in me (part 2)

Written by Toro-Obong Udoh · 1 min read >

While the human chit-chat was on, the angry beast stared, waiting patiently for the best time to strike. The beast that hated humans was in their vicinity; they were barely 100 meters from their demise. With the rise in industrialization, humans decided to make the forest available for camping. This act led to the loss of the once beautiful forest, the death of many animals, and rendered the rest homeless. The slaughter was horrible; while some got shot, others fled to the human-originated fire and burnt to death. In all these, full diligence was not done, and one escaped, one who would repay men with the evil they truly deserved. The fathers have eaten sour grapes, yet the teeth of the children are on edge.

He growled slightly and ran his tongue from side to side. The last time he had human meat was before the winter. Now, nature brought his favourite dish to him. His job was simple – strike at the right moment. However, he was aware that men had a tool – the same tool which ended his family. A loud bang and he will join his family wherever they are – so if he was to have them for dinner, then his timing must be right.

Mary promptly reminded her lover of their camp meeting and how he could not take his eyes and hands off her. She had a panic attack, and he comforted her. That was how and where they met, a match made in heaven. The experience was painful. It was as if her heart was tightening. Her emotions were as loose as a wild canon. It stung like the loss of a loved one. The pain was unbearable as if she had lived this life before and was experiencing a moment in her past life.

Sweat, tears, shouts, and pain echoed in the forest as the rest of the camping team rallied to provide solace to the teammate. The camp instructor, well knowledgeable by books and wise via experience, was short of strategies to resolve the matter. Varied attempts to provide relief proved abortive. The outcome was similar to filling a basket with water.

For some strange reason, Pete stooped down, sat Mary between his legs, and began to stroke her hair in a cuddling position. Thinking of him as a pervert, the ladies of the camp group, although visibly displeased, were amazed at how rapidly she began to calm down. It was as though their hearts knew each other and were in some form of inaudible cosmic communication. He sustained the cuddling and hair stroke till Mary was indeed calm and had begun to fall asleep. Since he was the one that was able to calm her down, he now had the responsibility of carrying her for the rest of the trip. Without any opposition, he straddled her on his back like a little child and went through the confused crowd as they began their journey back to town.

…to be continued next week.
