DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Written by chinyere ihegworo · 1 min read >

TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and even Telegram all have something in common. They are all social media sites. I am sure in one another’s phone we should have at least two or more social media sites that we use for easy access to entertainment or to help with various work. But even is this social media we are talking about? Well, social media are interactive technologies that facilitates the creation and sharing of ideas, information, interests and other forms of expression through virtual network and communities. But as I will always say, as there is a good side to something, there is a bad side to it.

  1. Social media sites can cause anxiety and depression. As crazy as it may sound, it is very common in today’s world that we are all stuck on social media. Spending too long on social media can alter your mood greatly. Social media lets you see the selected parts of someone’s life and you unfourtunately compare your life with theirs not knowing what’s neede to know. This results in low self esteem leading to anxiety and depression. If the case probably gets out of hand, this could eventually lead to suicide.
  2. Before social media was discovered and popularized, bullying was the type of thing done face-to-face with someone. However, people can now bully others online anonymously or not. While social media enables you to be more sociable and have new friends, it also allows cruel people to tear into other people’s lives with little effort. Perpetrators can take advantage of the anonymity provided by sites and use it to gain people’s trust and then terrorize in front of their peers. For example, they create a fake profile and act friendly then betray them and embarrass them online.
  3. Apart from social media causing anxiety and depression, it can also cause an unhealthy sleep pattern in a person’s life. Latest studies show that an increase in use of social media affects your sleep negatively. Your devices emit blue light and using social media overexposes your eyes to the light, depriving it of proper rest.
  4. Another thing social media can cause is addiction. Social media sites are probably more addictive than alcohol or cigarettes. It draws people to check on it every time without even realizing it. Most people feel rejected if someone unfollows them or feel depressed if they’re favorite site suddenly disappears for a while. At the end of the day, it is the people on the other side benefitting from all this because they just want you to keep scrolling for as long as possible so they can show you lots of ads and make more money.
  5. Imagine someone behind those little screens looking beautiful, wearing expensive clothes on their perfectly shaped bodies and enjoying their lives to the fullest. Body image has become one of the most important things people look for in general and seeing those celebrities with their perfect shapes and curves (according to the beauty standards) has got normal people thinking why they are so different.
  6. I hope I am able to convince and not confuse on the negativity of social. I’m not saying that social media is entirely bad but that’s another story for another day.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
