Back to our Roots

Written by Otaoghene Oki · 2 min read >

For those living outside their premises, places [countries, states, cities, and local communities] of their origin, there are some silent matters we may be ignoring all in the name of improving ourselves and not minding what happens to our carcasses when our souls have been taken away from it. Some say it is where they toil they will invest in and enjoy their lives forgetting they have a root.

It is advisable to ensure we extend a hand of fellowship to improve the communities from which we originated, it is not a smart way to live by not remembering our source. Living in Lagos does not stop you from building an edifice in your local community/village, it does not stop you from investing in an ultra-modern library, school, hospital, hotel, resort, etc we Africans especially Nigerians sometimes forget or fail to realize that some of the countries other than ours that we struggle and spend millions of Naira to go visit for tours, vacations, school, research etc are villages and local communities of the indigenous people of that area but it turned out to be a place we crave to be in due to the improved modernization we see or perceive it to have. We also fail to understand that the improvement we see it having at the moment is the sacrifices of the indigenous people of those communities, they did not leave their homestead to go develop another man’s, for those that did, they ensured they invested in their communities to give it the improvement we do not flinch to pay millions today to explore in pursuit for good health, education or to relax. [labours of the forefathers]

I guess our brothers from the eastern part of Nigeria understand this principle better that is why you see them invest more in the villages they originated from, you sometimes hear them say things like “That is where they will be buried so they need to improve it” Some just find it outright wrong to improve another man’s land leaving theirs to suffer making them live like paupers in the cities they work or do business in while investing in their local communities of origin.

Looking at what Dr. Godwin Maduka a former Anambra governorship candidate under the Accord Party in Anambra State, who lives in the United States of America [USA] has done to transform his village into a modern town, you would agree with me on the importance of developing your origins even from a strange land.

Dr. Maduka built over 100 houses for widows. He also built Schools, Courts, Police stations, a Hospital, and Quarters for Judges,Police, and Teachers. Built a Pharmaceutical company, Churches in his village, Umuchukwu in Anambra state.         Dr. Godwin Maduka is the CEO of the USA’S largest pain and medical center in Nevada state with 80 employees. He is currently building Africa’s largest medical research hub, an 18-story skyscraper in his village. He also built a Chinese restaurant in his village.  He vowed to make his village beautiful as Las Vegas, USA where he works, which is a very clear example of someone that understands and practices this principle.

This piece was a fallout of a case we analysed under Analysis of Business Problems which clearly xrayed a lady who had done so well in the past but refused to identify with her roots. Not too long, the wealth she had garnered in Lagos began to fizzle away and she had to deal with a decision problem of the business and also putting a roof over her head.
