Have you ever complained that 24 hours are not enough to complete your tasks?
Like a popular saying, “time reveals things”. Time management is a widely discussed topics on the globe, but many people struggle to use it effectively. Though, it’s intangible, but its effect can be seen across the different plane of our existence, in business, family or even in academics.
Before we delve into the topic, the value of time, we need a quick intro into time management. Time management is the ability of a fellow to effectively manage his/her time, especially in a business clime like ours, thus being productive within the allocated time available per day in the world. In our world, countless individuals struggle with time management and this has robbed them of so much benefit they could possess as they couldn’t meet with the requirements or even produce the best result within a given time frame. Every day, I fight with this monster, PROCRASTINATION; indeed, it is a thief of our most scarce resource found in the universe, TIME.
Can we defeat this monster? Yes, we can but, it would require a constant flow of energy from our end to truly be masters of this scarce resource.
On writing this piece, I began to play different scenarios that had happened in my sojourn here on earth, where I have been admonished as a young man against this thief. In the same vein, I vividly remember the words of both Professor Ojiabo and Professor Owolabi about the importance of taking charge of our time and schedule, in order to get the best from the MBA program here at the Lagos Business School.
Time is fleeting, and I have found out that there is a lot of noise in the world. We must tune our ears to hear the sounds applicable to us, fixed our eyes on the goal and distract ourselves from the distractions that tug at our feet. In the book of Ecclesiastes, there is a chapter dedicated to the versatility of time and its various forms, we can’t sit idle wasting away, but we must take the bull by the horn.
How can we be masters of our time?
In taking charge of our time and deriving value from it, we must ensure that we identify time thieves, one has been mentioned, the others include; multitasking, not maintaining a proper task scheduling and not prospering allocating time or duration for each task identified or listed.
As an individual, I find it hard to multitask across different fronts, as I tend to pay attention to one object at a time. This, in itself, can be seen as a flaw in our world, as most businesses requires managers that can effectively spread their attention and energy across different items. Here is a caveat, don’t spread yourself too thinly.
Therefore, the value of time lies in us and our use of it, time ebbs so quickly that we tend to forget how volatile it is. We should ensure that we maintain a schedule of tasks and always tackle the task as they appear. Don’t wait till the last minute to get things done, finish them, and you won’t procrastinate.
In conclusion, we must remember the value of time and strive to manage it effectively. Thank you for reading.
