Written by Adeshina Lawal · 3 min read >

I enjoyed watching and narrating movies in order to express how well or bad the movie could have been. Hence, it was a movie review case study that require our attention for one of Analysis of Business Problem (ABP) EMBA 28 cohort. The pattern of the case study review is for the group to review together and have proper understanding and must have contributed based on individual effort to show in depth knowledge of the case study because the faculty may decide to call upon anyone to explain based on the group review. The advantage for an individual effort will reflect during both the group internal review and if called upon to present on behalf of the group.

Eye in the Skye, is a movie that I have not watch before and watching it for a review may sound funny because I hardly watch movie to be too serious for methodical analysis rather tell or narrate the story without structure to friends and family. We were provided with list of eight questions that will aid the discussion and scoped the intent of the case study.

We had a group review and share the questions into four sub-group categories and maximize the syndicate rooms at the Lagos Business School (LBS) during the break prior to our presentation for the ABP session.

We answered the following questions….

1.What is the crux of the dilemma here?

The crux of the dilemma in “Eye in the Sky” is the decision of whether or not to proceed with a drone strike to capture or kill a group of terrorists in Kenya. The decision-makers face several ethical and moral dilemmas as they weigh the risks and benefits of the mission, including the potential collateral damage to innocent civilians.

2. Does anything stand out to you about Colonel Powell (the Lady) through the different stages of the situation?

Yes, Colonel Powell (the Lady) is a central character in “Eye in the Sky,” and her actions and reactions stand out throughout the different stages of the situation.

As the situation unfolds, and the risks and potential collateral damage to innocent civilians become apparent, Colonel Powell’s character undergoes a transformation. She becomes more reflective and begins to question the ethics and morality of the mission. Her concern for the potential harm to innocent civilians becomes more prominent, and she becomes more willing to advocate for alternative courses of action.

In the initial stages of the situation, Colonel Powell is presented as a seasoned military officer who is committed to completing the mission and capturing or killing the terrorists. She is determined and resolute in her decision-making and expresses frustration when other decision-makers question the mission’s feasibility.

She recognizes the complexity and ethical dilemmas of the situation and is willing to bear the consequences of her decisions. Her character arc highlights the importance of ethical considerations in decision-making processes and the potential for personal growth and transformation in the face of difficult decisions

3. What do you observe about the team composition in COBRA – Cabinet Office Briefing Room?

The team composition in COBRA – Cabinet Office Briefing Room is diverse, with representatives from different government agencies, including military, intelligence, and political departments. The team members have different roles, responsibilities, and areas of expertise, which are essential for making informed decisions about the situation.

Another observation about the team composition is that there is a clear hierarchy, with senior officials such as the Foreign Secretary and the Attorney General having the final say in the decision-making process. However, there is also a recognition of the importance of collaboration and consultation among team members.

There is also was level of tension and disagreement among team members, reflecting the complexity and high stakes of the situation.

4. What do you notice about the extended team / supporting team (Nevada Air Force base: the pilot and his assistant, and the lady in the Hawaii base), in terms of who they are and their responses to the situation?

Pilot and his assistant: The pilot and his assistant at the Nevada Air Force base play a critical role in the decision-making process. They are responsible for flying the drone that carries the missile used for the drone strike. They provide valuable information about the feasibility and effectiveness of the mission and the potential for collateral damage. They also express concerns about the mission’s ethical implications. Ultimately, their recommendations and insights play a crucial role in the decision-making process.

Lady in the Hawaii base: The lady in the Hawaii base controls the drone used for surveillance, and her role is critical in providing real-time intelligence about the situation on the ground. She is the one who identifies the presence of the innocent civilians, including the young girl selling bread, and raises concerns about the potential for collateral damage. She expresses concern about the ethical implications of the mission and the potential harm to innocent civilians. Her character highlights the importance of considering the human cost of decisions in war and the critical role of technology in modern warfare.
