How Our Environment Affects our Productivity

Written by Ezugo Oguebie · 1 min read >

Most of my life, I had never given much thought to it. However, as I became older and looked inwardly some more, I figured it out – The productivity of one’s mind is directly related to their physical living or working environment. Indulge me as we ruminate on this idea.

Our homes and work spaces are often where we spend the most time wearing our many roles such as son, father, mother, brother, boss, employee, counselor etc. In the scramble to balance and execute these roles, sometimes, we do not give much thought to the effect the physical environment we are in, can have on us. But the effect is real, so real that we can become a different person when we get into different environments. If you doubt me, picture for a moment how you’ll feel in the Nigerian Federal Government Aso Rock Villa versus how you’ll feel inside a Lagos transport bus or “molue” as locally called. After this exercise, you may begin to agree with me that the state of our minds is quite dependent on the state of order or chaos around us.

You can as well argue that what factors in a space that constitute to chaos or order to anyone is relative and unique to them. Before we explore that idea, let’s first find the meaning of both words. Order is a situation in which everything is arranged in its correct place. It has synonyms such as sequence, disposition, structure, system, layout etc. Chaos on the other hand is defined as complete disorder and confusion. The synonyms are disarray, mayhem, pandemonium, upheaval etc. So will a painter or an architect in their studio see order or chaos in the same light as a Biology teacher would? Probably not but nevertheless, we can deduce that the state of our environment directly affects or minds.

What can we say about the condition of our environment in relation to our mind? By condition in this instant, we mean the level of hygiene inherent in the space. To further elaborate this thought, let’s picture being given a 5 Michelin star prepared meal to be eaten in the slums of Ebute metta. Juxtapose this to eating an average meal in the clean environment of Banana Island. Can one eat comfortably talk less of function optimally in the dirty streets of Ebute metta? This therefore, clarifies that for ultimate well being of a person’s mind, the cleanliness of the environment is critical.

In closing, this discuss is a reminder for us to ensure we have clean, clear spaces when we want to perform optimally, mentally. Setting aside a few minutes to clear our table at the end of work or make our bed when we wake up, would lead to a calm, focused mindset when we come back to the environment.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
