Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are not just buzzwords in the Nigerian workforce, but they are necessary for companies to thrive in today’s world. In this blog post, we will explore the relevance of DEI in the Nigerian workforce and the statistics that show the need for more diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Nigeria is a diverse country with over 250 ethnic groups, multiple religions, and different languages. Despite this diversity, the Nigerian workforce has been slow to embrace DEI, resulting in limited opportunities for underrepresented groups. According to a report by the World Economic Forum, Nigeria ranks 128th out of 156 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index, indicating significant gender inequality in the country.

The Nigerian workforce is also struggling with diversity. In a report by McKinsey & Company, only 19% of Nigerian executives believe that their companies have effective DEI initiatives in place. Furthermore, a survey by Ernst & Young found that only 24% of Nigerian companies have formal diversity and inclusion policies.

These statistics show that the Nigerian workforce has a long way to go to achieve true DEI. However, there are many reasons why DEI is crucial for companies in Nigeria.

Firstly, DEI enhances innovation and creativity. A diverse workforce brings different perspectives, ideas, and experiences, which can lead to better problem-solving, new products, and services, and a more significant competitive advantage. According to McKinsey & Company, companies in the top quartile for ethnic and cultural diversity are 35% more likely to outperform their peers in terms of financial performance.

Secondly, DEI improves employee retention and engagement. When employees feel valued, respected, and included, they are more likely to stay with the company and be more productive. According to a report by Deloitte, companies with inclusive cultures have higher employee engagement scores, lower turnover rates, and a more significant commitment to the organization’s mission.

Thirdly, DEI promotes social responsibility and contributes to building a more just and equitable society. Companies have a responsibility to create opportunities for underrepresented groups and promote a culture of respect and inclusivity.

So, how can companies in Nigeria implement DEI initiatives?

Set clear goals and metrics – Define what DEI means to your organization and set measurable goals and metrics to track progress. Ensure that these goals align with your business strategy and are linked to tangible outcomes, such as increased retention, engagement, or revenue.

Assess and address bias – Evaluate your hiring, promotion, and performance evaluation processes for potential bias and take steps to eliminate it. Consider implementing blind screening and assessment tools, providing unconscious bias training to managers, and creating accountability mechanisms to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all employees.

Create an inclusive culture – Foster a culture that values and respects diversity and inclusion. This includes promoting open communication, providing opportunities for employee feedback and engagement, and recognizing and celebrating differences. Encourage employee resource groups and affinity networks to promote a sense of belonging and provide support and development opportunities for underrepresented groups.

Invest in diversity – Invest in recruiting, developing, and promoting diverse talent. This includes expanding your talent pool, partnering with community organizations, and providing opportunities for career growth and advancement. Consider implementing mentorship and sponsorship programs to support the development of underrepresented employees.

Hold leaders accountable – Hold leaders accountable for promoting and advancing DEI initiatives. This includes tying DEI goals to performance evaluations and compensation, providing regular feedback and coaching, and promoting leaders who demonstrate a commitment to DEI.

In conclusion, DEI is essential for the Nigerian workforce to thrive in today’s world. Companies that embrace DEI can unlock the full potential of their employees, improve innovation and creativity, enhance employee retention and engagement, and promote social responsibility.
