My First Intensive Week Experience

Written by Onyinye Ezeugbor · 1 min read >

It was Monday morning, and I was happy that I wouldn’t be rushing to the office for the usual weekly meetings with my colleagues at work. Anyway, I had informed my Director that I will be away the whole week for the ‘intensive week’ for my MBA program at LBS. Nothing had prepared me for the intensity of the sessions and activities I experienced during this period. Although, I had heard about how demanding the MBA program at LBS was, I assumed (which I shouldn’t have), that the sessions would be less demanding and rigorous when compared to taking the classes and combining with work load (which was actually waiting and accumulating).

The first session was Analysis of Business Problems – ABP. A course I should enjoy but I’ve realized that I need to develop my critical thinking abilities to be able to understand the cases discussed, to analyze them and make meaningful contributions during the sessions. In this course I am learning the importance of asking questions in any given situation, which is an art and science of analyzing problems that will lead to logical and optimal decision making. It is not easy just as it sounds and I must commend the faculties handing the course. They are the best at handling it.

The next session we had was Corporate Financial Accounting – CFA. The faculties handling this course are the best in this field. They are willing to ensure that no student is lost during their sessions. They use relatable examples and good humor to drive home the lessons from each session. They simplify the terminologies used in this course such that someone like me who ran away from accounting in secondary school is very interested in learning the course. Although I still need to put in some work to understand the components of financial accounting.

We had Data Analytics – DA as well. This is the best course for me as far as I’m concerned. No stress at all. I will attribute my ability to understand this course to my background in Economics. The only challenge with this course is calculating using excel. Don’t judge me yet until you hear my story but that will be another day. The faculties handling this course are gurus.

Finally, we had Management Communications – MC. This is the easiest course for me because I like writing (not academic papers though) which is important because of its relevance to communications. The sessions we have had so far have been interesting for me because they challenged me to be better. For instance, the design class where I put into practice my skill in designing an A4 poster was amazing. I would normally outsource the task to someone else to do for me because I felt it was not contributing to my managerial function at work but now, I understand that I need to practice to get better at it and it could be a skill I can monetize😊.

Thank you for journeying with me to this point on my first intensive week experience. In my next posts, I will delve deeper into each of these courses mentioned above by sharing my experience in each of the sessions.
