The life in me

Written by Toro-Obong Udoh · 1 min read >

As the scent of the warm summer caressed his moist nose, he was assured that the forest would soon be normal. The winter had run its course, now the first blossom of the summer was just about to unfold. The wild-beast well-known and hated by man-kind peeped across the bushes and growled at the family who ignorantly had wandered into his domain. His job was now simple – wait until sunset and launch the offensive.

Pete had just taken his new family for a vacation in the woods, defying all existing fables and warning the elders. His wife a well-known rebel notorious for going against existing traditions some without recompense and others coming at a cost which she paid with a smile. However, this journey was not going to be like the others; it was that which would alter the course of her life permanently.

The sun had finally gone to sleep and Pete rapidly organized the campfire both for warmth and for protection from the wild. However, there was one lurking behind the bushes waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Mary his wife was engaged with their seven-year-old daughter who unlike her parents was already trembling with fear. She was not the type to be left alone in a dark room and being in the wild her screams will readily provide their location to the beasts of the night. With much effort and already tired from the stress of the journey, Mary successfully achieved the feat of putting her to bed.

She then joined her partner outside who was already lying on the forest floor and gazing into the night skies. “What are you thinking of, honey?” she asked. Pete, without breaking his glaze responded by asking her if she ever thought about the beings that set the stars where they were and set the course of the elements. “Don’t tell me you have joined the bandwagon of fictitious folks? We have gone to the moon and back and no other life forms were found. So, what do you mean by beings?”

“It’s just a thought, let it not ruin our night, you know one of the reasons we came here was to relive our past experiences as a couple,” Pete responded turning to face his wife who was already blushing. Pete and Mary met on a camping trip while in high school and although she had a rough childhood, Mary was quite daring and open to challenges which am in sharp contrast to the expected folding and shrinking common to children who wore the same shoes as she did and towed a similar part.

This was their second trip having closed out on the first trip to Paris. Mary chose to go there first as that was where Pete proposed to her which conflicted with Pete’s position which was to go to where they first met. The conflict was settled with Mary’s choice being the preferred route.

…to be continued next week.
