The beginning of my MBA journey

Written by Mary Elero · 1 min read >

The decision to pursue an MBA or not has to be one of the most important decisions I’ve had to make in a long while.

There’s the cost implication to think of and the guarantee that it can help jumpstart my career in the corporate world and give me the necessary skills and experience to help me stand out. There’s also the time and commitment to consider especially having to run a small business and take care of my family.

I knew that I wanted to pursue a higher degree when I graduated from the university and started working in a consulting firm. I was not sure if it was going to be an Msc. or MBA. My boss and some other people I admired at the time had an MBA. I admired their work ethics, leadership and problem-solving skills.

They encouraged me to acquire some work experience before proceeding to apply for an MBA. I took the advice while I was still working and I started making research on the best school to get an MBA in Nigeria.

Lagos Business School was top on the list with the quality of faculty members, distinct curriculum, international experience and industry engagement with businesses in Africa. These qualities ticked all the boxes and I had LBS as my first choice.

In September 2022, I finally decided to write the NMAT exam to enrol at Lagos Business School and I would say that it is a decision I am glad I took. The journey so far has been tasking. I did not expect it to be this intense but I know for sure it is a good start to greater things.

There is always something interesting to do socially and challenging to do academically but there is not enough time to do everything. There is the opportunity to be mentored by an alumnus of the institution and to join student-led activities (clubs) which in my opinion is a great way to help students network and learn.

We started with the brush-up sessions and it was an enlightening experience for me. One of the most important take-home for me in that session will have to be the time management session. The ability to prioritize and manage my time effectively and to critically take decisions.

I have started the journey with the  #MMBA4 and I am hopeful and excited about the impact this journey is going to make in my Life and career. In my opinion, #MMBA4 has to be one of the best cohorts to have enrolled in this institution. The genuineness to help one another is always a beautiful sight to behold.

I am currently looking forward to actively participating in the Dean’s competition and I am optimistic that my cohort is going to emerge winner of the competition.

“A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery.”
