One of the essentials of business is communication. Effective communication in business is not limited to internal or workplace communication, where people within the organization communicate with one another i.e, communication among managers, supervisors, team leaders, trainees etc. Business communication equally applies to the way and manner the organization communicate with the larger society where it operate i.e, customers, shareholders, regulators etc. Business communication can therefore be categorized into two broad category.
- Internal Business Communication
- External Business Communication
Internal business communication is designed to support the effectiveness of business operations. Since communication is essential in any organization, it is imperative that business leaders use different kind of information structure to facilitate the passage of vital message across different cadre of the organization. Internal business communication essentially apply; Upward communication, which is communication from a junior staff to superior staff. Managerial communication, which is also known as downward communication, is the passage of information from top or superior staff to a junior staff in an organization. Lateral communication is the communication across department and between colleagues.
External business communication is designed to support the effectiveness of business by portraying positive image of the business to the members of the public with interest in the organization. i.e, customers, regulators, shareholders etc. it uses Surveys meetings and PR (public relations) in communicating as means of its communication.
Business communication utilize different methods in passing information across. Essentially, there are three major communication channels which business organizations use. The three communication method can be useful depending on the situation and the nature of the discussion.
- Verbal Business communication
- No-verbal business communication
- Visual business communication
Verbal business communication entails real-life conversations. This can be in-person, over the phone, or via video. This form of communication is rampart in communication that is lateral. Day-to-day activities is communication among colleagues rapidly for the continuous business operations.
Non-verbal business communication include every way you can communicate without actually saying anything, such as body language, facial expressions, listening, and eye contact.
Visual business communication is the application of graphics, PowerPoint presentations, photographs, signs, posts, advertising, etc. it is mostly used in external communication and marketing. Also, it can be used within the workplace. For instance, as artwork reaffirming the business’s goals and targets. This business writing is there to encourage employees, as well as remind them of what they’re working towards.
