The concept of development in African states has been very controversial. Over the centuries, Africa has been painted as a continent of barbaric people who lack culture and civilization. That is, African states are characterized with peoples that require redemption. It is from this perspective that the western world relate with African states from every facet of her interaction with Africa.
What is Development?
Contrary to how the west have categorized Africa in their definition of development, development in human society is a many-sided process. At the level of individual, it implies increased skill and capacity, freedom, creativity, self-discipline, responsibility and material well-being. However, what is indisputable is that the achievement of any of those aspects of personal development is very much tied to the state and the society at large. From the earliest times, man found it convenient and necessary to come together as group to hunt for the sake of survival. The interaction with one another within any social group is crucial in the understanding of the society as a whole. Freedom, responsibility, skill etc. have real meaning only in terms of relations of human in the society
In the quest for development, each social group comes into contact with other. The relations between individuals in any two societies are regulated by the two societies. Their respective political structures are important because the ruling element within each group are the ones that begin to dialogue, trade or fight, as the case may be. At level of the social group, development implies and increase in capacity to regulate both internal and external relationship.
It therefore implies that development occurs in the relationship between two society or group of individuals and their level of understanding of their environment. It is often believe that the concept of development only makes sense when it is being used from economical perspective only. The fact is that the type of economy is itself an index of the other social features, Economic development is reflective of how much members can manipulate their environment and their level of understanding laws of nature and the extent with which they put it in practice. The form of development occurs around the world, and Africans not left out.
Every continent independently participated in the early epochs of the extension of man’s control over his society, which means, in effect, every continent can point to a period of economic and social development. While every society have experienced development, it is equally true the rate of development differed from individual to individual and also from state to state.
In conclusion, development is not the exclusivity of any race, society or continent. It is therefore imperative to conclude that at every stage in human existence, we can see trappings of development because without it, man would subservient to the environment even up to this moment.
Just my opinion!
