According to a Chinese proverb, which state that; the Journey of a thousand miles begin with a step. My Lagos Business School (LBS) experience and Journey started like a dream with an initial intent to study at the London Business School (LBS) but with a contending that my journey may be refined with the LBS acronym by deducing to accept the reality of the same acronym while cash became a factor having the pounds sterling’s at hand to spend and leave work based on forex or choose LBS Lagos Business School to spend naira with same value.
However, my career had a real “detour” when got an offer to one of the profound Information Technology company that require me to learn and share my career plan as pathway during an on boarding process. What I did is to make London Business School (LBS) priority for Executive MBA but I got a mail in reference to my career plan that the management will not be able to sponsor any training outside the shore Nigeria rather I should provide a Nigerian business school that will offer same content.
After, the on boarding review ; I had a follow up engagement upon my appraisal by the company Human resources partner that I am eligible for a day training on “Financial for non-financials managers” at the prestigious Lagos Business School(LBS). It was exhilarating seeing and a great mail to be scheduled for such training at least leaning towards what may come in future. I attended the course with my colleague but a financial personnel, who knows he’s onions but yet ready to unlearn by complimenting the course content in finance.
Alas! On this faithful day May 2017, we arrived at the Lagos Business School (LBS) and what was fascinating was the ambience, the warm hospitality at the entrance with the professional Security men as if you are at the United State Embassy. This alone, depict same value that I must have been looking out for in any Business school outside the country.
Follow me closely, we were provided guidance at the reception and given our course material for the day with other Business school kits. Hence, the case study and pencil were embedded in the school kits for our use.
The class kick started on this date May 2017 and the seating arrangement, review of the case study, the dissect of diverging viewpoints per perspectives, the tagged name on the desk and every other detailed of learning was profound within 45 minutes of lectures facilitated by a Faculty: Learning Asset Account, Liability account, Owners Equity, revenue and what a balance sheet his in a simple terms. What thrilled me most was a professor with an Engineering background and later study finance as another degree, is the faculty delivering Financials for Non- Financial Managers. We had a break and my curiosity made me ask him “why the change of lane?” meaning from Engineering background into Finance; he simile and answered that he loved figures and had good knowledge of engineering mathematics but want an economically value out of it, in his words but paraphrased. We concluded the Open day with the financials for Non-financial manager and this take like One hour and forty-five minutes a day course to get ourselves familiarised with Lagos Business School (LBS) and had a great lunch at the canteen. All we hear is “Enjoy It” at the Lagos Business School (LBS) canteen after been given our Lunch. We were amazed by the sumptuous meal at the Lagos Business School (LBS) and was still in awe of the Faculty how he broke down the topic and dissect the case study with the pedagogy of learning.
Finally, we had great time for that one day short course Financial for non-financial managers, and got the office next day to share my report for the Lagos Business School Experience. I came with my Finance Colleague Shola Ashaolu which state to unlearn and learn with the non-financial Manager like me.
