Qualities of an effective vision board

Written by Abosede Ogunjobi · 1 min read >

A wise person once said,” If you don’t know where the end is, how will you know when you get there?”

When you take time to establish what your goals are for yourself, you will be better off than those who carelessly go through the year, and hope for things to improve.

A vision board, is a creative process to set clear intentions and goals for what you want in life , so you can grow and transform yourself.

It can also be defined as a collage of images, pictures and affirmations of ones dreams and desires. It is designed to serve as a source of inspiration, and motivation to attain goals.

If a vision board is not properly created, it might end up being ineffective.

Here are some of the qualities of an effective vision board.

  1. Get clear on your vision. This is very important. Before you can create an effective vision board, you must have spent some thing thinking about the vision and crafting it.
  2. It must contain your visions. Most importantly, the stuff you want to look at everyday to keep you focused on your goal.
  3. It must contain your goals and timelines. This may include short-, medium- and long-term goals. It is important to indicate the timelines for each of the goals to make it easy for you to track your progress towards achieving the goals. It is important to be able to break the goals down into action plans. Trying to get every detail together all at once, may get you overwhelmed almost immediately. Move significantly towards your vision every day.
  4. Pictures. The vision board should be a collage of images and pictures of your dreams and desires designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation to attain your goals. If your vision is to build a house, looking at the  picture of a house of a similar nature, will motivate you to work towards achieving that goal.
  5. People that will inspire you. The vision board should contain pictures of people who inspire you, so that the board remains a daily visual reminder of what you want to achieve.
  6. There must be a strategy or a system behind the vision board. This makes you focus on the process and not just  the prize.
  7. The vision board must be displayed in a place that is very conspicuous. This enables you to see it every day and continuously work towards your goals. Spend about five to ten minutes reflecting on it every day. This will motivate you to action, and make your dreams more believable than ever before.
  8. It is important to be able to identify key strategic partners that will move you towards your goals. Be intentional about staying connected with them. The worst thing you can do, is to isolate yourself.
  9. What you want is half of the equation, what you put in is the other half. It is important to keep your eyes open for opportunities that will help you get to your goals. #EMBA28
