Bridging the Gap; LBS Approach to Meeting the Unique Needs of Students

Written by Isma’il · 1 min read >

As the world becomes increasingly digital, the traditional model of in-person education has been challenged by the emergence of virtual learning. Lagos Business School (LBS), a leading institution in Nigeria, has not been left out of this trend. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, LBS is now offering learning in hybrid system; physical and virtual via google teams. Except during what is called “intensive week” where all students are required to attain lectures physically.

Inspiringly, technology is highly embraced in LBS in all ramifications including the use of Microsoft office Package, such as excel spreadsheet especially in courses like Data Analysis and Corporate Financial Accounting and word and power point in courses like communication management, Analysis of Business Problems etc.

In doing this, students would be well train on the use of computer system apart from the benefits from the course content.

As a student at Lagos Business School, we have opportunity to learning data analysis using Excel spreadsheet, and it was an amazing experience. From the very first day, I was impressed by how the course was structured, how the facilitator were knowledgeable and engaging, and how the other students that we use to called assistant lecturers were enthusiastic and supportive.

One of the things that make the course so great is how hands-on it is, and we were taught how to use Excel’s tools and functions to analyses and visualise data. We started with simple techniques that most of us are familiar with like sorting, filtering, formatting etc during the brush up sessions and then moving slowly on to more advanced methods. I can’t imagine myself solving probability problems such as conditional probability, decision tree etc. using excel spreadsheet.

Another course that employs the use of excel spreadsheets is Corporate Financial Accounting (CFA). the facilitator is equipping us on how to prepare and analyses financial statements using excel.

What I’m appreciating mostly is how the course is tailor to address our specific needs. The facilitator took his time to ensure that every student understand the course and being carry along. Having understood that our backgrounds and goals are different, but he believes as business owners or executive manager we need the understanding of accounting.

In the area of sport, like many other schools both national and international do, LBS organizes sport activities in football competition for men and volleyball for women. The event occurs once in every academic calendar. The school use to invite professional match officials (Referees) to ensure fair play during the competition. However, what will be interesting for us to know is whether the school would employ the use of technology such as; Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Goal Line Technology etc. as it’s done in the professional game.

In conclusion, the LBS approach is an effective method for meeting the unique needs of students. By providing individualized support and facilitation, it helps students to develop a growth mindset, become more confident in their abilities, and achieve their full potential.
