It happened to me

The Bedrock

Here we go with another quantitative course (Data Analytics). Our Professor Bongo Adi was leading the discussion and introducing the probability in business analysis and the way to calculate. While I was familiar with the functions and how to apply, interpreting the results for proper assessment solidified my understanding of the weighted average calculations and respective business decisions. I felt comfortable during the sessions especially that we had the opportunity to apply the same functions on my system while the course is moving. During one of the sessions, I was called by the instructor to be one of his assistants in this course. I wish that I will be able to add value to my colleagues in need of support with my limited free time.

Jumping to another type of courses, Analysis of Business Problem led by Dr. Segun Shogbanmu. In the begin of this course, the whole class disappointed him. We were attending the classes unprepared. Everyone should have read the case ahead so we can discuss and analyze together but none of us did it. Even though, the instructor explained multiple times that he can’t teach a case, he will drive us towards analyzing the case and to understand the decision-making method steps for adequate analysis. That couldn’t happen when all of us were not prepared. So, we had to read and study the cases while in class. Things changed after the 1st assignment (The Future of Biopasteur which was later analyzed in-class) and I believe that I should give more attention and focus on this course. “Always say the truth”, was one of the lessons which changed my approach towards the problems.

On 3rd of February, I came back to Lagos with my family. I had to join my class in the airport down the road till I reached my house. Being tired from the night flight, I tried to manage staying awake to attend and participate online. Unfortunately, during the last session (Analysis of Business Problem) Dr. Segun asked us to read a business case (Slamdex Stores). While reading, I noticed that I am not focusing on the content and suddenly I fell asleep to wake up later in the night and the class was over.

On Saturday 11th, we had our 1st physical class at LBS campus. I woke up early, dressed formally as per LBS code and drove my car early to beat the unexpected traffic; to find myself after 25 minutes in front of the building. I arrived earlier than expected around 8:20. The security guard at the main gate was so friendly and showed me my parking spot with an innocent smile. I had a walk under the trees and met a colleague at the entrance. We walked together to our classroom. It was my first time in the building and didn’t know where to go.

The welcome of my colleagues was so relaxing since I didn’t meet anyone before other than online. Not to forget Madam Toyin “The Hero Behind the Scenes”; always available to answer any inquiry without hesitation.

The physical presence in-class is a new experience while being surrounded by Executives. The cleanliness of walkway, stairs and every spot in the classroom were noticeable. At the end of the day, I was counting the minutes to leave and go home to see my family. Unfortunately, I was caught in terrible traffic and reached the house completely exhausted. It is really an interesting program, guiding us towards changes and uplift of our career. I will fight to reach my goal even if I have to stay awake overnights, I will keep moving until graduation from LBS #EMBA28.

  1. Excellent summary of the last 3 weeks on the EMBA journey @Mehrez. That dozing off part had me made me smile knowingly – but its our reality. And yes, Toyin is our #EMBA28 star girl. Wish us all the best as we move forward towards the finish line.
