Winning the Trophy

Written by Okechukwu Ohanta · 2 min read >

Imagine playing in the World Cup Football finals or completing a Relay Race and being presented the winning trophy. The feeling is indeed satisfying as well as fulfilling. The greatest enemy of oneself is actually one’s own bubble – thinking everything is going right – ignoring external perspectives and obviously giving in to complacency. These were the thoughts that inspired my drive to seek more knowledge and skills from the experts at Lagos Business School. The quest to seek proper and structured mentoring, as well as building professional network connect to further my career progression was birthed by my taking up the EMBA programme.

As you may agree with me, people do not want to be compelled or controlled against their will – however, the feeling of being in an ‘enclosed’ setting to seek the desired knowledge and the required skills to help navigate the career bottle-necks, may suggest as one being ‘compelled’ against the enjoyed freedom of time. The current busy work life and family deserved attention, in addition to the sacrifice of waking up at the mid-night to spend some hours to read up, as well as attend to assignments and class works can obviously be perceived as the denials of the freedom of time. The focus therefore for me is to dissuade this perception and drive towards lifting the winning trophy at the end. This new journey of EMBA has offered me the opportunity to meet awesome and great friends that share same passion in navigating through the courses, the assignments and the case studies. This has demonstrated the need of ‘team-work’ as the bedrock to succeed through the EMBA programme – as they say, one cannot navigate through the programme alone; you will require the support of classmates to pull this through. The over-all support and cooperation from my classmates has indeed been lifesaving for me. I have grown interest in regular readings, research and always looking forward to studying case studies, the associated discussions in class looking for solutions to problem-related scenarios.

My early days in LBS for EMBA programme has been very impactful. Imagine looking out for the solution whilst reviewing a business problem scenario. The Analysis of Business Problem course offers the key steps to follow in analysing a scenario, while noting that every problem is unique and requires different solution-approach. The point to note for me is that the solution of a problem is usually deduced from first analysing the problem scenario using some key steps that presents the identified problem as well as the solution options before you. This approach has indeed been awesome as well as interesting for me. Whilst agreeing on the positive impact of the EMBA programme, the obvious challenge of time seems to pose conflicting influence on the celebrated success with the flowing tide in the quest of knowledge – the struggle to ensure that tasks and timelines at the office space are met, the demanding attention by spouse and children in the family space, as well as the desired concentration and commitment expected with the research and regular readings for the EMBA courses. In all these, I’d fast-tracked myself to the end of the programme – visualising the wealth of knowledge that would have been deposited in me and that moment when I will be presented the trophy. The struggle is indeed real!! However, the driver remains – winning the trophy, expectedly waiting for that satisfying and fulfilling moment when all these would be over and I would be crowned with the success of completing the ‘race’ and handed over the ‘winning trophy’. Hope to see you then!! #EMBA28
