From JAPA to LBS; a confectionery learning

Written by Isma’il · 1 min read >

Initially, my plan was to “JAPA” as it is popularly called i.e. relocating abroad, preferably the UK. After putting so much effort in place like getting admission in the university, completing my IELTS exams and visa processing. I suddenly started having thoughts about my current job, my family and my growing business. I wondered if my relocating abroad was worth it considering that I would be leaving my family behind and the years I put in to grow my business. I immediately changed my mind. I reasoned with myself and figured I could get the same quality of education in Nigeria, MY COUNTRY! Then and there, LAGOS BUSINESS SCHOOL (LBS) came to mind.

As an aspiring business leader, I was thrilled to be accepted into the Lagos Business School, one of the top business schools in Nigeria. I had and still have high expectations of the school, and I am not disappointed.

Upon my arrival on campus, I was immediately graced with its beautiful surroundings. The campus is lush and green, with modern facilities blending perfectly with traditional and contemporary architecture.

On my first day of class, I was impressed by the quality of instruction and the level of engagement from my fellow students. The facilitators were knowledgeable and experienced, they challenged us to think critically about the business issues we were studying especially on Analysis of Business Problems (ABP). We were given a case (Dima Nigeria Ltd.) to analyse within an hour. Indeed, it was challenging but it really helped in improving my analytical skill.

In addition, my classmates were passionate about their studies and eager to collaborate with one another on projects and assignments.

One of the highlights of my time at Lagos Business School was the opportunity to participate in a real-world consulting project when we were given a group assignment. We were asked to pick an industry of our choice, analyze the most current financial performance and their liquidity ratios in one of the courses called Corporate Financial Accounting (CFA). We immediately organized ourselves as a team, got the materials, analyzed the data, agreed, disagreed between ourselves and drew a suitable conclusion.
Another beautiful experience in LBS is teamwork. We work together, share knowledge and experience with immense respect for one another.
In conclusion, joining a business school like LBS is an opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds, network, make lifelong connections, attend student events, join clubs and mentorship programs that align with my area of interest. Interestingly, I am not afraid or reluctant to reach out to fellow students, facilitators, and staff members for support.
