Man’s Freedom

Written by Nnenna Nick-Obiegbu · 1 min read >

There are many theories concerning freedom. there isn’t just one definition.

The dictionary defines freedom as the condition of being free; the power to act, speak or think without externally imposed restraints.

Man has free will unquestionably since he is a thinking being. He must use this to think clearly to make decisions. His freedom of choice, though, may be constrained by the laws of nature.

Some philosophers like Plato) will say free will is an ethical exercise, while other philosophers will say that morality should be disconnected from free will. Most people believe that the choices of man are determined by internal and external factors, of course, while this is true, it doesn’t mean that we should ignore the presence of free will.

we can argue this because there is no clear distinction. This is why we must differentiate these theories.

For instance, if we are unable to properly differentiate between such theories, others may assume that with a few adjustments through observation, anyone/some persons can be easily manipulated or motivated to always act in a way that would suit them, We’re not saying this does not happen, we are just saying it is important for there to be a clear distinction.

Sometimes, free choice is determined by the events that preceded it.

There are two types of freedom.

 freedom FOR and FROM.

Freedom “from” constraint is to do as one feels. Freedom “for” refers to excellence as a human being. /Freedom for (often referred to as “freedom to”) Means the freedom to aspire or the freedom that gives greater fulfillment as a human being.

There is no true absolute freedom because, whenever we make a choice, we constrain our freedom to the one we picked. Our freedom is therefore the ability to make choices and commitments.

It is when we make the right choices that we are truly free. When we make wrong choices, we limit our future freedom and enslave ourselves.

Let us note that “Freedom from” without “freedom for” is self-destructive.

As you recall, we mentioned that “from” is to do as one pleases right/wrong, while “for” is doing the things that give greater fulfillment as human beings. So, therefore, we can say Freedom is not just making choices but making the right choices.

Our character development and development into the real individuals we are today are shaped by our experiences and lessons.

We are admonished to take a step back and consider everything that lifts us and be thankful for anything that brings us joy or gives us the courage to go on.

We are further admonished to seek the truth as did the Youtubers in their “exploration of the Orphanage home”, “Leper Colonies”, and “living homeless on the streets of New York.”

We, future Managers, should understand that we need to exercise our decision-making in a strategic and empathic manner that advances both the organizational and stakeholder(s) interests – beyond making profits.

True freedom is, therefore; the realization that we are formed by the choices we make.
