Emotional Intelligence, Cross cultural Communication and the art of persuasion

Written by Peter · 1 min read >

Emotional intelligence can be measured by their self-awareness and capacity to control their own and other people’s emotional responses. Although the idea has been around for quite some time, it has only recently become the subject of extensive research.

To put it simply, cross-cultural communication is the process by which people of various cultural backgrounds come to appreciate one another. The greater the number of people who are able to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries, the greater the possibility that bridges of trust and understanding will be forged.

The art of persuasion is the skill of swaying others to agree with one’s point of view or line of argument. The capacity to persuade other people typically requires the use of multiple cues and methods to affect their decisions and mindsets.

the capacity to recognize and interpret one’s own and other people’s emotional states. In this approach, we might gain an advantage in situations requiring emotional intelligence by knowing our own emotions, their strengths and weaknesses, and by being able to recognize these traits in others. An example is a preacher knowing the right type of message for a burial gathering. He needs to understand the feelings of the audience.

An individual’s level of emotional intelligence can be a factor in their ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries. One could argue that this requires a more advanced level of emotional acuity. Some aspects of communicating across cultures are intrinsic, yet they are still attainable through deliberate practice. An example will be a company that has different tribes (i.e.,e Igbo, Yoruba, Efik,etc.c.,Inn this type of environment, we need to understand how each culture behaves so we can shape our expressions and communications appropriately.

The art of persuasion requires the use of the concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos.

Pathos is an appeal to the audience’s emotions.

Ethos is establishing the credibility and competence of the speaker.

Logos is the structure of the wording in the message, i.e., how logical is it?

An example is the way political candidates convince voters to vote for them.

An example of a workplace scenario that shows the absence of emotional intelligence The HR department fired a staff member who arrived late to work because he rushed his sick daughter to the hospital.

An example of a scenario that shows the presence of emotional intelligence A manager gives relief to his subordinates when they are in unfortunate situations

An example of a workplace scenario that shows the absence of cross-cultural communication is when a northern Muslim who works for an organization is not allowed to dress in her hijab to work due to a company’s strict uniformity principle.

An example of a scenario that shows the presence of cross-cultural communication is when Muslims are allowed to go for their Friday prayers.

An example of a workplace scenario that shows the absence of the art of persuasion is when a boss, instead of convincing his subordinates to work with his ideas, instead forces the idea on them.

As a manager, it is good to creatively persuade our subordinates to go with our ideas instead of forcing them on them.

Happiness: A Unique Inside Job!
