In addressing communication, 5 strategies should be considered for the smooth delivery of thought in writing or speaking. The communication strategies will be defined and I will be sharing their application in the workplace environment.
- Logical thinking and argumentation
Logical thinking and argumentation: This is the ability to think clearly with an open mind and being able to communicate your thoughts effectively by writing. It also allows one to scrutinize every argument to maintain conciseness and clarity.
b. Your understanding of the concepts and how they apply to SPECIFIC (examples) “workplace” and “social” scenarios
This concept is one that exposes your writing skill and also puts into perspective what is going on in your head.
Workplace Scenario: I remembered when I wrote a memo requesting a change of laptop, the memo was addressed to the Divisional Head but has to go through my immediate supervisor. After going through the memo, my supervisor returned it with a lot of strikes. He obviously passed a message across which is to put my thoughts together in a concise manner.
c. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the ABSENCE of the concept
When you have to write to the CEO of your organization requesting extra-budgetary approval. Here, there are too many things going through your mind and you just want to put them down as it comes.
d. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the PRESENCE of the concept
The aforementioned scenario can be properly scrutinized and well-polished before it’s presented to the CEO
2. Cross-cultural communication
This is the ability to understand humans at a higher level than emotional intelligence. Cross-cultural communication otherwise referred to as cultural intelligence is the ability of an individual to be able to understand people from diverse cultures and be able to relate well with them. They are able to understand their beliefs, values, and culture beyond the ordinary.
b. Your understanding of the concepts and how they apply to SPECIFIC (examples) “workplace” and “social” scenarios
This concept is higher than EI or IQ. It literally means you are now very good at relating with people without conflicts.
Workplace scenario: This would be with the Risk Manager of the company I worked with, she was always in our heads and the testimonies about this were evident. She knows how to give tasks and monitor them without conflicts.
c. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the ABSENCE of the concept
The Human Resource Manager, this role is expected to be in favour of your employee but the lack of knowledge about this subject matter is a challenge.
d. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the PRESENCE of the concept
Apart from the Risk Manager, another example is the CEO who operates an open-door policy with his employee. He has well interacted with his employee to know what’s next with them.
3. The Art of persuasion
Persuasion is the ability to influence someone or make them change their mind on a particular matter.
b. Your understanding of the concepts and how they apply to SPECIFIC (examples) “workplace” and “social” scenarios
This concept helps you to get to the minds of your audience in a way to either change their views or make them do what you want them to do.
Workplace scenario:
- A Marketer bidding for a contract must be persuasive enough to win the bid.
- A lawyer who has a case to present at the court with the intent to win the case must also be persuasive.
- Another example is in writing to the management requesting a change in the current process. Here, reasons must be stated and you must be persuasive enough for them to consider your request.
c. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the ABSENCE of the concept
- A marketer who is unable to close a deal because he/she wasn’t persuasive enough.
- A Lawyer who lost a case because he wasn’t persuasive enough.
- When your request wasn’t granted due to your inability to add persuasion in the body of your writing.
d. Provide at least one example of a workplace scenario depicting the PRESENCE of the concept
- A Marketer who has closed several deals.
- A granted request by the management.
