Normally, we use advertising to grow our businesses but there are certain advertisements that are not ethical. Advertisement reaches a number of people, it is a communication tool that reaches out to a number of people. Hence, we have to be careful in the message we are communicating so that we do not mislead people. Advertising has an impact on people, people rely on the advertisement to make decisions. People trust what they see and it can make them change their minds. It can also influence their decision-making.

Advertising is an integral part of a business, it promotes the company’s products and services. Advertising is a form of communication to persuade consumers to patronize the company’s products and services. Advertising can, however, be misleading, manipulative, and false.

  4. Good advertising protects the consumer by giving useful information about products and services and by conditioning manufacturers to maintain fair quality

  1. Advertising uses persuasive language to reach out to the market.
  2. It disseminates information to a wide audience enabling the products and services to be known to a significant number of people and probable markets.
  3. Through conditioning, affects our perception, attitudes, and behavior

Advertising and Untruthfulness

Since customers and the market rely on the testimony they get from advertisements, truthfulness is demanded. There is a thin line between exaggeration and lie telling. Truthfulness and clarity are needed in ethical advertising. It is wrong to deceive people no matter the means used.

  5. When advertising manipulates desires.
  6. When women are depicted as sex objects.

Unethical Advertising Techniques

  1. Surrogate Advertising: This is a situation where a product has been banned in a country but the country devises an indirect way of advertising the banned product. For example, the product has not gotten the right approval and you still go ahead and advertise it.
  2. Puffery: This means using subjective and unproven facts to promote a product.
  3. Exaggeration: Overstating the facts products.
  4. Unverified claims
  5. Stereotyping women in campaigns.
  6. Use of children in offensive adverts.

Negative effects of unethical advertising

  1. It encourages the culture of consumerism and material accumulation.
  2. Women are sometimes depicted as sex objects or are denigrated in sexist campaigns.
  3. Promotion of violence and malevolent (violent behavior).
