THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA 2023

Written by Judith Okotcha · 1 min read >

Politics is an interesting branch of social sciences. Whereas in Nigeria, it is seen as a dirty game where only strong willed and determined people play.

Over the years, politics and electoral practices in Nigeria have evolved. Since the inception of Nigeria as a republic, we have seen a total of 13 heads of state (President) ranging from Nnamdi Azikiwe to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently in his second tenure which started in 2019.  His opponent (former Vice President Atiku Abubakar) from one of the leading parties(PDP) claimed he was robbed of the position as President of Nigeria in the 2019 general elections, he even took up the case against the All Progressives Congress(APC) to court.

Testimonies from various Nigerians in and outside Nigeria have shown that this current administration is not favorable. Considering this, Nigerians are supposedly geared up for the imminent 2023 presidential elections across the country. PVC registrations are taking place, further enlightenment, and sensitization to participate in the forthcoming election is ongoing. As it is part of our fundamental rights as citizens of the nation.

The forms for the various parties went on sale and the prices varied for each political party. This includes both Presidential, Gubernatorial, the National Assembly and other positions within states. With the All-Progressives Congress (APC) having the highest price above all others.

Political parties have been slated to hold primary elections from May all through to June 2022. In addition, Gubernatorial elections will be held in 30 out of the 36 states in 2023, alongside the Presidential elections. The INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu and the whole board have mapped out the budget for 2023 elections.

The irony of this saga is about the future of Nigeria and the joke portrayed by the intending aspirants. So far, the citizens of our dear country have not seen the absolute man for the job as far as the truth is concerned. Recently, there have been a rise especially for the presidential office and one cannot help but wonder why their manifestos are not in line with the immediate need of the country.

Nigeria as a country is almost in a state of anarchy. As a nation, we experience incessant and deteriorating cases of insecurity, lawlessness, wavering economy, bad leadership, no infrastructure, poor educational and health system and so on. All the nation needs right now is not a perfect man, but someone who has seen these challenges and is ready to make positive efforts to alleviate the situation in order of severity and importance.

Hopefully, we get the right man for the job, and this can only be achieved if we, as a people channel our energy into making Nigeria better. To do this, the first step is to get a permanent voter’s card (PVC) and be ready to go out there when the time comes and exercise your right as a citizen, and vote your preferred candidate under no form of bias or subjugation.

We now await as the days draw near to when Nigeria Decides. God bless Nigeria.
