MMBA Courses

For the MMBA program, there are a total of 12 courses to be taken; four courses per semester. When I saw the course list, I was happy about some of the courses on the list. For example, I felt good to see Entrepreneurship, Operations Management, and Marketing on the list because these are topics I am really interested in. One of the reasons why I joined the MMBA program was to get a better understanding of how to run a business the “proper and scientific way” and not with “head knowledge” alone. Although I run my own business, I have no formal training on how to run a business. Everything I have always used my intuition and knowledge from some of the business books I have been privileged to read. I was disappointed to find out the courses I am most interested in will not be part of the courses for the first semester of the MMBA program. The first semester courses are Analysis of Business Problems, Corporate Financial Accounting, Data Analytics, and Management Communications.

Analysis of Business Problems(ABP) is a course that deals with analyzing business problems. The main faculty for this course is Dr.Yetunde Anibaba. The course seeks to help us understand how to take a holistic view of business problems and come up with solutions. It encourages the business executive to pay attention to details. To take into consideration every minuscule detail in order to be able to make informed business decisions. It makes use of business problem cases. In order to profer a solution to the problem, we need to study the case meticulously. It requires us to follow a well-defined set of processes before coming to a conclusion and recommending a solution to the problem.

Corporate Financial Accounting seeks to help MBA students gain a basic understanding of accounting. The main faculty of this course is Prof. Akintola Owolabi. He has really been helpful in helping a lot of us who have no accounting background. He explains concepts using simple and easy-to-understand examples. The main area of concentration for the first semester is financial statements. We have been taught that there are four plus one financial statements. Understanding financial statements is important because it helps us understand what is happening in a business financially and it helps investors decide whether to invest in a business or not. This course requires dedication and time to understand.

Data Analytics is a course that is really good for MBA students who will be going into data analytics in some way. It is also very useful for every MBA student because of the Microsoft Excel(AKA excel) component of the course. There is hardly any business where excel or spreadsheets are not used. I have particularly found it very useful because in my line of work we use excel all the time. Frank Okoye and Bongo Adi are the faculties handling this course. Franks handles the excel and data analytics part and Bongo Adi teaches the probability aspect of the course.

Management Communication is a course I did not even think was very useful. However, I have learned a few things that I have personally begun implementing in my business dealings. Atinuke Adelakun and Eugene Onu are the faculties handling the course. The course seeks to teach MBA students how to communicate well in business because communication in business is so important it has to be done well.
