One beautiful afternoon many years ago, a cousin of mine came back home with a Lagos Business School folder. I believe he was attending one of the leadership programs in the school. That was the first time I go to know about the school.
Few months later, I attended a wedding ceremony of a friend of the family, his name is Yinka. At the ceremony, I could not help it but notice a beautiful looking young couple that was in attendance. The husband was wearing all-white native attire while his wife was gorgeously dressed in native attire with a touch of red. They came to the event in a silver color Mercedes Benz coupe. From what I know about people who drive coupe, they usually have more than one car. They were like a symbol of success and a beauty to behold which gave me a mental picture of myself in years to come.
Few weeks after, I was having a conversation with the newly married man Yinka; we were talking about his car (2010 Toyota Camry). He asked if I noticed a man that drove a Mercedes Benz coupe to his wedding, my reply was you cannot but notice the young man’s swagger. He told me that he bought the car from the young man. The man decided to sell the car after about 11 months of using it because he did not really have a need for it and he had other cars that he preferred using. The man was a senior member of staff with MTN then and still had a bright future ahead of him. One thing that Yinka said that I will almost never forget is that the man holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Lagos Business School and the and that the prestige of the school coupled with knowledge he gained from it has helped him propel his career.
From that point onwards, I took special interest in the school and had always wanted to be a member of the alumni society from the school. I was a young man with dreams that seemed impossible then…hahahaha! The school fees of the school was probably less than 50% of what it is now but it was still a big deal for me then knowing no one is coming to my rescue in my quest of attending LBS, it’s a responsibility that I will have to shoulder on my own. I did not see a way to make it possible but I had a will and guess what, few years down the line, I am a student of LBS and 2 years from now, I will be a graduate of the same school.
This is a true life story of when there is a will, there is a way. I am a true believer in believe, and I believe that we as humans to a large extent create our own reality. I understand that there are factors beyond our control that can limit us, slow us down, serve as hindering factors but the major limitation of man is vision. “look as far as you can see in every direction” the lord said to Abraham Gen 13:14 (The New Translation,Bible. I believe that my life will be transformed after the program; I just hope that my capabilities will not be limited by my vision.
