A peep into the student handbook listed a number of things to expect from studying at LBS, it roughly 6 weeks since we started and rumor has it that an item on the learning objective; organizational problem-solving capabilities based on concrete data has come under attack as a useless course with no real life impact. I believe it does but it is unfortunate that it is perceived as a useless waste of time.
The disconnect is that the lecturer failed to tie it to something concrete or detail how important it is. Who will tell the facilitator that some of her students think her course is useless?
Big picture of core functional areas of business: In this era of globalization and high competitiveness among companies, it is important for our graduates to have a big picture of business. This will help our graduates see the interconnectedness of enterprise. Graduates will have a well- rounded knowledge of the core business disciplines, embodying an understanding of their theoretical foundations, as well as the ability to apply this knowledge to actual problems.
Organisational problem solving capabilities based on concrete data: Graduates should be able to demonstrate problem-solving capacity through lateral, critical, innovative and creative connections among diverse fields of study in analysing problems. They should also have developed the capacity to perceive many relevant features in business problems and situations, overcoming purely functional points of view. This encompassing new perspective should be based on concrete data relevant to the operation of the business taking into cognisance internal and external factors.
Decision making based on analytical competence: Graduates should have developed the capacity to apply relevant tools of economic, financial and quantitative analysis. Business decisions should be based on good analysis that ensures the economic viability and sustainability of the firm. This is a critical skill for our graduates because running a business is always about making decisions that will affect the bottom-line of the organisation.
Global perspective with local relevance: Graduates should have a global perspective, based on an understanding of both the domestic and global environments of the organisation and an acquaintance with current Nigerian and global best practices.
