Nowhere to Run

The environment is not an inheritance from our forefathers, it is a loan from our children. We are faced with serious climate change, that affects us all, now our forest is 10% lesser to what it used to be, food production is seriously impacted negatively, most communities in the northern part of Nigeria had been lost completely due to humans action, that has brought serious climate change.

All the floods, drought, and fake weather conditions we are experiencing are because of our action, which is having a huge impact on the climate directly affects our environment. Also, our fast increase in the population is putting pressure on our natural resources, each year we lose over 351,000 hectares of land to advancing desert. Deforestation is one of the human actions which affect the ecosystem largely, over 10% of deforestation can be attributed to new infrastructures that serve the current human lifestyle in three main ways: transportation, transformation, and energy generation.

On one hand, roads, rails, ports, or airports have been built to move all sorts of goods – from cereals and fruits to spices, minerals, or fossil fuels – either directly to trade centers or to transformation sites. So while at first there were only fruit trees, roads soon arrived to allow transporting fruit to other regions. And while some goods were and are collected manually, others such as coal, oil, natural gas, biomass, but also meat, dairy, or spirits, required the construction of large extraction, transportation, and/or transformation infrastructures.

An increase in population is leading people to move from rural areas to urban areas, contributing to deforestation. The urban areas are experiencing rapid growth and as cities become larger so they can host more people, they challenge the natural boundaries surrounding them, often leading to deforestation. This is one of the reasons why deforestation is happening. Other human actions affecting the ecosystem are forest fires, mining, and illegal logging.

All these inappropriate actions of ours are leading to climate imbalance and climate change, an increase in global warming, acidic oceans, wildlife extension & habitats loss, soil erosion, and food insecurity. We caused these problems for ourselves, everybody as whole needs to work together to resolve the problem, we all created. The solution is to curb the felling of trees by enforcing a series of rules and laws to govern them. The money-churner nature of forest resources can be tempting enough for deforestation to continue. Land skinned of its tree cover for urban settlements should be urged to plant trees in the vicinity and replaces the cut down trees. Also, the cutting must be replaced by planting new trees to replace the older ones that were cut. Our daily consumption of paper includes printing paper, notebooks should be reduced and we should sort for an alternative like do more softcopy documents, only when necessary should the paper be used. Make life simple such as printing/writing on both sides of the paper, using less toilet paper, avoiding paper plates, and napkins and wherever possible.

We should all be deliberate in protecting our environment, except we have another planet to live in like Elon Musk.
